The Surge

A boundless underwater world where ancient magic and everyday wonder exist side by side. Home to millions of creatures, but none quite like our four.

A World Bigger Than Any Map

The Surge is not one place, it is everywhere at once. It is the warm, sunlit shallows where young fish learn to swim and Pop races the currents just because she can. It is the slow, ancient silence of Coralheim, where the great coral spires have stood since before anyone alive can remember, their walls covered in the painted stories of those who came before.

It is the Kelp Canopy, where shafts of surface light fall between towering fronds and the whole world smells of salt and possibility. It is the Glow Flats, where Lumina meditates among thousands of softly pulsing lights at dusk, and where Crunch once lost three different shells in the same afternoon.

And somewhere beyond the edge of the known shelf, wrapped in ink-black cold and strange pressure, lies the Fathom, a place the crew hasn't fully explored yet. Not yet. But they will.

Gribb
The Grump

The Seagull Who Never Asked for Any of This

Gribb is a grey-and-white seagull of indeterminate age who has, against every stated preference, become one of the most important members of the crew. He complains about the cold. He complains about the heat. He is consistently, almost impressively wrong about which direction the wind is coming from, and he brings it up constantly when he's right.

What Gribb will not tell you, and would deny if asked, is that he has saved the group approximately seven times through sheer stubborn refusal to accept a bad outcome. He will grumble the entire rescue, deliver it flawlessly, and then spend the following week complaining about how ungrateful everyone was.

He perches on the highest point of wherever they're resting and affects total indifference to everything going on below, while in reality tracking every single development with his sharp, slightly judgmental yellow eyes. His sarcasm is legendary. His timing is perfect. His loyalty runs deeper than The Fathom, and the one time Pop told him that directly, he flew away and didn't come back for three hours.

Lumina
The Wise One

The Light That Guides

Lumina is a jellyfish who glows, not because jellyfish usually do, but because Lumina contains something older and quieter than most creatures in The Surge. Her trailing filaments shift through violet and rose-pink depending on her mood, and when she is deep in thought the light pulses in slow, hypnotic waves that other creatures unconsciously drift toward.

She is the eldest of the group, though no one knows by how much. She speaks carefully, never uses five words when two will do, and has an almost impossible ability to say exactly the right thing at the exact right moment, something that took years to feel like a gift rather than an inconvenience. She does not rush. She does not panic. She does not tell you what you want to hear.

What she offers instead is something rarer: the truth, delivered gently, at the perfect time. She has known The Surge longer than anyone and carries that knowledge not as authority but as comfort. She is, in every sense of the word, a source of light. Crunch finds her presence both deeply soothing and mildly terrifying, which Lumina considers entirely appropriate.

Crunch
The Worrier

Shell Number Forty-Eight and Counting

Crunch is an orange hermit crab with spectacular eyebrows and a deeply complicated relationship with commitment. He has, at last count, lived in forty-eight different shells since the crew first met him. The problem is never the shell itself, they're always good shells, often excellent shells, but what if there's a better one? What if the next crevice holds the perfect one? What if he already had the perfect one and gave it up for this one, which is good but maybe not perfect?

This existential spiral is Crunch's defining feature, and it would be exhausting if it weren't also so thoroughly, helplessly funny. He is aware it is funny. He cannot stop. He worries about everything: the mission, the weather, whether Gribb is secretly angry at him (Gribb is always at least a little angry at him), whether he made the right call, whether there even was a right call.

And yet, when the moment arrives, when things go genuinely sideways and someone needs to squeeze through a gap no one else can fit through, or hold something together with sheer grip strength and nervous determination, Crunch delivers every single time. He is the crew's secret weapon: a small, anxious orange crab who, when it truly matters, is absolutely magnificent.

The Stories

Every adventure in The Surge begins with a single question: what's out there? Here are three to start with.

Story 01

The Light Beyond Coralheim

When a strange, pulsing glow appears on the far side of Coralheim's eastern wall, a glow that no one can explain and the city elders insist has always been there, Pop decides the only sensible course of action is to swim directly toward it. Crunch, currently on shell number thirty-nine, reluctantly agrees to come along, on the condition that they stop if he finds something better to live in on the way.

What they discover beyond the wall is not dangerous, not magical, and not at all what either of them expected. It is something much smaller, and much more important than either of them was prepared for.

Story 02

Gribb and the Impossible Storm

A storm is coming, a real one, the kind that scrambles the currents and turns The Kelp Canopy into a churning dark tangle. Pop is three reefs away and unreachable. Crunch has had a complete shell crisis and locked himself into a particularly sturdy piece of old pipe. That leaves Gribb and Lumina to get the young creatures of the Canopy to safety before the water turns.

Gribb has never been the responsible one. He would like everyone to understand that. But with Lumina's quiet guidance and more courage than he has ever had to find at once, he discovers that sometimes the grumpy one is exactly who the moment needs.

Story 03

Something in the Fathom

The whole crew this time. A signal, low, rhythmic, barely there, has been drifting up from The Fathom for three days. Lumina recognises the frequency but says only that it is "very old, and very patient," which helps no one. Pop wants to go. Gribb insists he does not want to go, then goes anyway. Crunch has already changed shells twice in preparation.

What waits for them in the deep is the most important thing any of them has ever found. It will change what they know about The Surge, and about each other, forever. This one is the big one.
